 Modern Myth # 11 -- Self-indulgence Satisfies

Have you ever noticed that compulsive desires are never satisfied by indulging them – that cravings are not eliminated by giving in to them? For example, if you eat a bite of something sweet that you crave, you immediately want another bite. That’s because feeding a desire fuels its fire! People who are weight watchers know that: “To indulge is to bluge.” And addicts say: “One is too much but 1,000 is not enough.

Society encourages us to obey the myth that says “self-indulgence is satisfying,” but the more self is indulged, the more self clamors for, until we become little more than slaves to our self-demands. Far from being satisfying, self-indulgence brings bondage.

The truth is that compulsions, cravings, and desires are satisfied by self-restraint, not not by self-indulgence. Restrained cravings will cease their control and their clammoring within a few weeks, while fed feelings are forever fanned into flames.

Leslie Vernick puts it this way: “When we feel unhappy or hurt, lonely or unloved, we wrongly believe that we will feel better if we indulge ourselves. That is not true. The results of a self-indulgent psyche or lifestyle are not happiness and good self-esteem, but bondage.”

Birth Control For 11 Year Olds?

Portland, Maine put a new spin on “Show and Tell.” The Portland School Committee recently voted 7-2 to offer birth control to children as young as 11 at King Middle School.

A news report says that the Portland middle school will make a full range of contraception available to the kiddies, including patches and pills. I wonder if the pills will come in gum ball colors. Maybe they could put Hannah Montana pictures on the patches. Or how about Teletubby condoms?

Portland School Committee chairman John Coyne, who voted against the decision, says that people keep asking him; “Are you guys crazy?” How do you answer them, John?

And the Governor of Maine, John Baldacci, uses his political tightrope walking skill to say: “I appreciate local officials trying to address a need in a medically appropriate way, but these are children. An appropriate balance must be struck addressing the troubling situation that a small number of students find themselves in and recognizing the important role that parents and other family should play.”

So what ever happened to educating children — teaching them to make wise decisions? And what business do government schools have promoting sexual indecency to children? The American media promotes sexual immorality to children in order to make money. What motivates government schools to promote sexual activity in children?

Is Mitt Romney's Mormonism A Problem?

Why do many people have a problem with Mormonism and with voting for a presidential candidate who is a Mormon? For me the main problem with Mormonism is its dishonesty and deceitfulness. Mormons try to appear to the public like something they are not.

Mitt Romney recently stated that Mormons, evangelicals, and Jews share fundamental values. He said: “We believe in God. We believe that liberty is a gift of God.” His statement is not completely true, however. Mormons do not believe in the same God that Jews and Christians believe in.

The Christian and Jewish God is an invisible spirit. The Mormon god has a physical body.

The Jewish and Christian God is eternal and has always existed. The Mormon god was procreated by another god and one of that god’s wives.

The Christian and Jewish God is the Creator of universe and of everything that exists. He is the only God that there is. The Mormon god is not a creator at all. He used to be a man living on earth and was promoted to the position of being the god of this planet. The Mormons believe that there are other gods who rule other planets in the universe. They also believe that good male Mormons will one day get to be the god of their own planet.

Christians believe that Jesus Christ was conceived by the Holy Spirit in the virgin Mary. This doctrine is called “The Virgin Birth.” Mormons claim that they believe in “The Virgin Birth,” but instead they believe that their god in his physical body came to earth and had physical sexual intercourse with Mary thus ending her virginity.

Jews and Christians believe that God supernaturally creates human spirits. Mormons believe that their god procreates human spirits by having physical sexual intercourse with his physical wives. That is why they began with polygamy and why even nowadays many male Mormons have multiple, secret, “celestial” marriages in their temples.

When a Mormon missionary approaches you, he will say that Mormons are Christians. However, if you ask him about any of the non-Christian beliefs mentioned above, he will squirm for awhile and try to change the subject, but if you are persistent he will finally admit to them.

Mormons have the right to believe whatever they want to. (Search any of these Mormon doctrines on the Internet and you will find much information about them.) However, when they try to present their non-Cristian beliefs as Christian, they are being deceptive and dishonest.

To be honest, shouldn’t the Mormons publicly admit that they are not the Christian church that they claim to be? And shouldn’t an American presidential candidate be open about his religious beliefs instead of trying to make people think that his beliefs are like an evangelical or a Jew?

 Funny Headlines

These recent headlines in The Tennessean came across to me as funny.

People who live in Wilson County, Tennessee should beware of a certain building that is on the rampage. Headline: “Wilson County Building Surges.”

A male ex-trooper gets in strange trouble. Headline: “Ex-trooper Accused In Porn Actress Case Faces More Charges.” Not only is this guy a nasty actress, but he is in other trouble as well.

Should teachers be paid with checks, cash, gift cards, credit, debit cards, or groceries? Headline: “Seeking Best Way To Pay Teachers.”

The Tennessee Titans frequently have a slot receiver. Now the way is open for them to have a slot quarterback as well. Headline: “Move Opens Slot For Titans To Add Quarterback.”

This guy is not one of America’s dumbest criminals! Headline: “Man With Knife Runs After Robbery Try.”

You might just survive your next hospital stay in Tennessee. Headline: “Tennessee Hospitals Improve At Keeping Patients Alive, Study Finds.”

And what does this one mean? Headline: “Scripts To Split Off Newspaper Operations.” I never heard of newspaper surgery before. I sure hope that the surgeon doesn’t leave the newspaper in a patient in a Tennessee hospital.

 Porn Is Becoming Pervasive

I saw the following statistics in a magazine recently:

$3,075 is spent on pornography every second. Every second 28,258 people are viewing pornography on the Internet. And every second 372 people are entering adult search terms into search engines. Every 39 minutes a new pornographic DVD or video is made in the U.S.

Did you know that there are 420 million pornographic pages on the Internet and that Internet pornography sales total $4.9 billion a year?

Worldwide pornography sales are more than the combined revenues of Microsoft, Google, Amazon.com, eBay, Yahoo!, Apple, Netflix, and Earthlink. The U.S. pornography sales alone exceed the combined revenues of ABC, CBS, and NBC.

Pornography is no longer just an issue of private morality. It is now a huge economic force with vast social implications. It is frequently linked with sexual abuse, sexual assault, prostitution, and other forms of sexual exploitation. Prostitution depersonalizes sexuality and demeans both those who use it and those who are portrayed as sex objects.

Human beings have a right to protection from this social scourge that exploits people and erodes society. Isn’t it time to scorn all porn and to make the demeaning of the human body illegal?
