 Modern Myth #10 -- Disapproval = Hatred

Somehow our society has accepted and promotes the mythological idea that to disapprove is to hate. If you don’t approve of someone’s behavior nowadays, you might be accused of “hate speech” or of having a “phobia.” This however, is nonsense.

Even the people who love me the most, my immediate family, sometimes disapprove of my ideas or actions. But they still love me very much! Their love for me has nothing whatsoever to do with their approval or disapproval of my beliefs and behaviors.

So why is it any different in society? If you disapprove of lying, that doesn’t mean that you hate liars. Someone you love dearly may frequently lie, but you still love her or him, don’t you? Just because you disapprove of lying, it doesn’t make you a liarphobic, does it? So how can disapproving of homosexual behavior have anything to do with hate or fear?

People who demand that other people approve of their behaviors have to be very insecure. After all, no one on earth is completely approved of by everybody. Just look at the US President (no matter who he or she is).

Millions of people are constantly disapproving of what the President says and does. Does the President turn around and call those who disapprove of him “haters” or “phobics?” Of course not. He or she is too secure of an individual to fall for that myth! And neither should the rest of us! We need to deny the lie that says that to disapprove is to hate!

Motivation Quotation 24 -- Why Not Disagree?

Motivation Quotation: “Unanimity is worse than censorship. Unanimity forces us to repeat the truth of others even though we don’t believe it. It dissolves our own personalities into a general, monotonous chorus.” –Luis Aquillar

Motivation Ideas: Unanimity is defined as: “the state of having the agreement and consent of all.” Unanimity puts pressure on people to voice their agreement with popular opinion. It means going along with the majority even if you have personal reservations.

Unanimity in regards to moral issues is widespread nowadays. Want to sleep around?–That’s fine. Use recreational drugs?–No problem. Desire abnormal sexual activity?–Whatever. Cheat on your taxes?–Not my business.

Today there is no official censorship against those who want to speak out for traditional morality, but the power of unanimity has all but killed the voice of right living in our time. The silence of unanimity has been more effective than censorship as we have surrendered to the monotonous choruses of “anything goes” and “toleration” and “judge not.”

Here is an example of how unanimity is working in middle Tennessee. Some local public high schools (that don’t allow the promotion of God) have been promoting and playing a very popular rap song in their pep rallies. The lyrics describe the sex act in the most vulgar words and put down women. The song was also played publicly in a local religious school.

Isn’t it time for those of us who recognize the importance of the moral standards that have served mankind through out history, to break our silence and stand up for what we believe? No one should be compelled to go along with our beliefs, yet no one should be able to demand our silence through the pressure of unanimity!

There must be some fairness in our culture. If people have the right to proclaim and revel in immorality, people should have the right to speak out for and rejoice in right living! Paul of Tarsus doesn’t mind raising his voice against unanimity when he proclaims: “Don’t be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

Here’s some motivation. No matter how strong the pressures, no one has to surrender to unanimity! You don’t need to agree with me or with the clamoring corruption of our culture. You can think and act for yourself! Why not break the hold of unanimity and begin to think and speak out for righteousness?

Dear Abby II Denounces Biblical Morality

Dear Abby II, Jeanne Phillips, who inherited the Dear Abby column from her mother, is using the column to attack Biblical morality by promoting the modern myth that compulsions are uncontrollable. The Associated Press reports that Phillips finds “parents who reject or try to reform their children when they come out of the (homosexual behavior) closet” to be “offensive and misguided.”

So what right does this woman have to attack parents who choose to teach their children Biblical morality? Phillips says: “I’m trying to tell kids that if they are gay, it’s OK to be gay. I’ve tried to tell families if they have a gay family member to accept them.” Dear Abby II is wrong on this one. No human being has to passively surrender to cravings, compulsions, or tendencies! (See my recent post called “Myths Of Our Time # Nine.”)

Dear Abby II says that she supports an idea that no civilization, people group, or tribal people has ever supported in human history until our time — “same-sex marriage.” A person has a right to choose to engage in sexual behaviors that go against the natural design of the human body, but it is not the government’s business to sanction their behavior!

Phillips illogically compares disagreeing with homosexual behavior to the injustices done to blacks and women. She ignores the fact that the prejudice against blacks and women was based on physical characteristics and had nothing to do with behavior.

Here is a common sense fact that is being ignored nowadays. All Americans have an equal right to engage in immoral behavior, but we don’t have the right to demand public approval of our deeds!

Little Things Are A Really Big Deal!

Little things are huge. Take the bolts on a battleship for instance. What if a ship builder built a battleship using weak, faulty bolts?

I’m sure that that battleship would look great. And it would be very intimidating for enemies to see it. But under the pressure of sailing the sea, it would fall apart.

The thoughts that we human beings think and even our smallest behaviors are like the bolts on a battleship. If out thoughts and behaviors are weak and faulty, we won’t be able to successfully cope in the rough seas of life.

Are you building your life with weak, faulty bolts?
